In the past, large libraries of videotape and film were among the best resources a company had. The information and material contained within were a wealth of historical, business and educational information of great interest to customers, prospects, partners, employees and shareholders.

What’s more, the content that exists in its current state is typically of little value since it hasn’t been indexed properly and therefore can’t be fully researched in a timely manor. The tape and film stock it is on is also fading and degrading in quality.

In today’s instant, on-demand world, companies can earn additional revenues with their content by taking advantage of being digital and online. That’s why more and more companies today are looking for a quick and efficient solution to transform their existing tape and film libraries into a valuable, instantly reusable online resource compatible with virtually all type of digital formats – from streaming multimedia, interactive TV and podcasting to video, mobile devices, PDAs and beyond.

The advantages of a company “going digital” are great—and measurable. By putting your library and archives in readily available, on-demand formats, your company:

  • Becomes more visible to Internet users worldwide.

  • Drives more qualified prospects to your website.

  • Interacts with customers and prospects in a more compelling and memorable way; keeping them involved and exposed to your services and products longer.

  • Takes advantage of additional revenue streams through digital ad insertion and pay-per-view material.

Maximize your intellectual property and other branded assets by taking full advantage of the marketing and customer fulfillment opportunities digital media have to offer. Let our experts help you determine what solution is right for your business needs today and into the future. And, see why top Media & Entertainment, Publishing, Government, Health Care & Pharma, Financial Services, Technology and other content-intensive industries have chosen Onstream Media’s Smart Encoding Services.

What’s Encoding?

With broadband video being used more and more by today’s companies (ranging from corporations and media enterprises to governments and non-profits), the ability to make this content compatible for not only websites, but also iPods, PDAs, and mobile phones is more important than ever. Encoding is the process that makes it all possible.

How It Works

Tape and Film to Digital: The first part of encoding creates digital versions of video and taped archive material, transferring it into proper formats and bitrates for online capability.

Digital is Encoded: Even material that’s already been created in digital format has to be encoded in different formats at different speeds so it can be compatible with the variety of today’s media devices. For example, videos compatible for Apple’s QuickTime player must be encoded differently to be played by Window’s Real Media player. In addition a, a website’s streaming video must be formatted differently for use in an iPod or PDA, etc.

Encoded Data is “Chapterized” and Tagged for Search Engines: For digital media, long videos are broken down into chapters for use with today’s devices (think of how movies on DVD are divided into scene selections, allowing you to instantly skip around, while a VHS tape runs continuously from beginning to end). Each chapter then undergoes various taxonomy and metadata processes, making it easy for a user to find exactly what he or she is looking for (in the right bit rate and format) through a simple search.
